A roof collapses if there s no support rock wall within 6 squares of the tile. This means that the largest square room you can have is 10x10 internal. Interior areas built larger than this will remain partially unroofed. You ll need to build a few supports when you start replacing walls to prevent roof collapses or cave ins.

Use the regular remove roof area option found in the architect zone area menu to draw an orange area above the roof you want to remove. Larger roofed areas can be built with the use of interior walls as pillars. Changing the zoning does not change. A roof can extend up to 6 tiles from a wall so roofed interiors have a maximum size of 12 cells across the shortest side.

Be careful with 12x12 rooms if you re planning on replacing the walls like exposed mountain rock wall stone block walls. Rimworld defenses come in all shapes and sizes and this can be customized to work with all of them. Walls alone can fend off early game raids if enough repairmen can keep the walls standing while enemies start to starve and become tired. Walls also protect from predator attacks and manhunter packs which cannot reach colonists safely inside unless a colonist is seen passing through doors at which point they will attempt to break them down.

But by explicitly marking a zone as a build roof zone your colonists will always construct a roof there. Forget to replace mined out rock with support walls and you ll have squashed pawns in short order. They will remove it like any other roof. If you removed 2 entire walls and the corner between those two sides last then that roof was too far away from any other supports.

Note regardless what the build roof zoning says you can only build roofs a certain distance iirc 6 tile from a wall mountain. That is what i found out for me i cant promisse you thats 100 true for every situation since i guess it is possible to support more tiles within a.
